<longtitl>The Council of the City of Perth approved the Development Application of the City Square and Griffin Development Buildings.</longtitl>
<txt>The Council of the City of Perth approved the Development Application of the City Square and Griffin Development Buildings, being a 46-level office tower proposed for 125 St Georges Terrace, the site of the old Newspaper House complex, and a 14-level tower on an adjoining property on Mounts Bay Road.Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the new developments would bring back activity into a key central city area that had been vacant for many years.
Heritage buildings on the site, including the former Newspaper House buildings and the old Perth Technical College, are to be retained and restored as part of the development.
The development - to be known as City Square will feature what is set to become the tallest building in Perth. The new development will be a striking addition to the city skyline, with its unique spire finish rising to 270 metres, making it Perth's tallest built form within the CBD.
The other building will be home to the Griffin mining group and provides an interesting architectural contrast to its taller neighbour.
Provision has been made in the Griffin development for public access across Mounts Bay Road to the City Busport and Esplanade railway station.
This project is being undertaken in collaboration with Hassell.</txt>

<titl>Office Design Raises The Bar</titl>
<longtitl>fitzpatrick + partners were the successful architects presenting a design that sets a new standard in architecture for Parramatta.</longtitl>
<txt>Parramatta City Council has conducted its first ever design competition for the 60 Station Street development site with joint venture partners Grosvenor and Leighton Properties. fitzpatrick + partners were the successful architects presenting a design that sets a new standard in architecture for Parramatta.
"Whilst some of Australia's most well known land marks have been the outcome of design competitions: the Opera House and Federation Square, they have rarely been used at a local council level. There is little doubt the process raises the standard of overall design." said Rob Kerr, Managing Director, Grosvenor.
"Parramatta is an attractive alternative for corporate and Government tenants to the more expensive Sydney CBD markets. This design reflects the style and quality of a CBD office building in a location that suits financial and professional services as well as Government. Employees will also benefit due to the location being close to the railway station and bus terminus," Mark Gray, Managing Director, Leighton Properties explained.
The design competition is intended to achieve design excellence, and encourage innovation without delaying the development approval process.
"The design competition raised the bar for design in Parramatta" said Cr Paul Barber, Lord Mayor of Parramatta City Council. "The process has enabled Council to see the very best in development tenders and the high calibre of designs presented reflects Parramatta's status as a key commercial centre" he said.
Under the NSW Government Department of Planning's new guidelines, the process involved three architects presenting to an independent jury. The developers prepared a competition brief approved by the Council. The architects were invited to submit a proposal based on the brief and present to the competition jury. The competition jury was made up of three parties: an independent representative for the developers; an independent representative for the Council and the Director General of the Department of Planning. Designs were judged broadly on design excellence, planning compliance and economic feasibility. The successful architects, fitzpatrick + partners demonstrated an intrinsic understanding of the Parramatta community and its on-going transformation.
Nick Sissons, Director, fitzpatrick+partners said the building's design is simple and pure. "The process of the design competition created the opportunity for something remarkable. Our key response was to recognise the future heart of Parramatta and direct the building's gaze towards this centre of gravity" said Mr Sissons.
"This core idea evolved into an elliptical form with a floor plate opening up towards the north and constricting towards the back where all the services are located. This is important because the services portion of the floor plate needs to be highly efficient."
"There are twin benefits. A big broad face looking north and a tight and efficient core toward the south all wrapped up in one simple skin," said Mr Sissons.</txt>

<longtitl>Bishops See Awarded a 5 Star Greenstar Office Design rating</longtitl>
<txt>The south tower of Bishops See has just been awarded a 5 Star Greenstar office design rating by the Green Building Council Australia.
The south tower, being Stage 1 of the Bishops See development, comprises a nine level office tower totalling 18,000 m2 and is set for completion in early 2009.
The tower's success in achieving the first 5 Star Greenstar office design rating for a commercial property in Perth is good news after its earlier success in gaining 100% in precommitted leases late last year.
Green Building Council Australia's Chief Executive Romilly Madew confirmed that Perth's first 5 Star Greenstar rating is important in setting a precedent in WA.
"The Australian property industry has clearly embraced green building and it's no longer a niche market, and it's a firm testimony from Hawaiian and Brookfield Multiplex in their commitment to sustainability that Bishops See will lead the way."</txt>

<longtitl>Macquarie Bank Building and King Street Wharf Awarded 6 Greenstar</longtitl>
<txt>The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) have awarded the KSW Site 1 building (1 Shelley Street) a 6 star green star office design rating, which is the highest environmental building rating achievable in Australia, demonstrating world leadership in sustainable building design.
The ecologically sustainable development (ESD) design features which contributed to the award include:
Using passive chilled beam technology and harbour heat rejection to cool the building at reduced energy levels; improved indoor air quality by substantially reducing formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds through the careful selection of finishes; reduction of potential long term damage to the earth's atmosphere by limiting the release of ozone depleting substances.
Other ESD features include: use of automated lighting controls, incorporating daylight harvesting,to utilise available daylight; reduction of light pollution from the building; minimising poly vinyl chloride (PVC) through the use of alternative products; using environmentally sustainable timber; provision of shower and locker facilities to encourage cycle use and minimise reliance on cars; using a performance coated double glazed fa?ade with dot frit patterns to minimise solar heat gain into the building.</txt>
