James Fitzpatrick

Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Design — University of Tasmania
Diploma of Dramatic Art in Theatre and Film Design — National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA)

After 9 years post graduate work experience in Australia, Japan and the USA, James foundered fitzpatrick+partners in 2000. The studio has subsequently grown from a 1 person practice to a studio of 50 professionals, undertaking the design of private homes, hotels, office buildings and towers, urban design of city developments and precincts, education and health projects across Australia.

In 2008 the studio formed a research division, F+P+R+D to investigate building products and methodologies. This study has specifically investigated the commercialism of engineered timber construction for large scale projects, with James assisting in many research and testing regimes in Australia and overseas. James is considered a world authority of the implementation, design and fabrication of such assemblies, being invited to lecture and advise on such projects around the world.

Not all the buildings designed by F+P are timber, but each project is defined by a logical analysis of frugality, place, systems, carbon intensity and materiality. This is over laid with a framework of our “rules”, producing respondent diagrams, which resolve and explain the aesthetic, function, planning and how we respond to our environmental emergency. The outcome is buildings with a respect of locale, materiality, proportion, colour and environment – buildings of delight.
