James studied architecture in Tasmania before moving to Sydney to study theatre and film design at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). After completing his studies, he undertook periods of work experience in the USA and Japan.

He founded fitzpatrick+partners in 2000. F+P an award-winning design studio with 45 architects, and is considered as one of Australia’s leading commercial architecture practices, with current and complete commissions across most states of Australia.

James’ approach to design is about achieving the fine balance between the design solution for ‘place’ and the practical importance of fitting buildings to people, the environment. It is an approach perhaps much closer to engineering than the high aesthetic ground, but is not unaware or unconcerned about the aesthetic outcome, instead, it sees this as more a result of good thinking than as a goal in and of itself.
